This week's edition of Everyday Style is all about making an outfit interesting. I own a lot of basics, but I typically mix them up in an unusual way, or I make them interesting by adding one unexpected piece. Sometimes that unexpected element is a very trendy item, and sometimes it's a just piece with more character or personality. In each of the outfits above, there is an element that pulls the outfit together and adds some character - the floral jeans, the legwarmers, the red lip/graphic sweatshirt, and the fringed moccasins.

So buy your basics, but if you see a printed scarf or a crazy pair of shoes that you immediately love, buy them! You need a handful of items that are just 'you' that you can pair with more neutral clothing. You don't need a closet full of trends or quirky pieces, just a few to mix in with your stripes and solids and blue jeans.

What are your favorite character pieces in your wardrobe? Do you think about this when you get dressed too?
