Emerald Lace

Today I want to share my adventures in holiday dresses. Soren’s work has a fun cocktail attire holiday party every December. I can never seem to find the dress that I have in mind, for my price point,  AND with the coverage I want. So last year and this year I went about making my own.

Last year did not work out as planned. I loved the vintage dress I altered, but Soren hated it – something about reminding him of his mom. Anyway since it was his party, after putting up a good fight, I ended up caving and buying a top and skirt last minute. It worked out eventually.

So the pressure was on this year. And, being semi-prego, dresses this year were even more difficult to come by. A good friend convinced me that I could make my own so I gave it a whirl. It is a good thing I didn't know what I was getting into, but it was a great learning experience. I will certainly start earlier next year. Trying to fit in hours of sewing into the week or two before Christmas is too stressful! I do love how it turned out and anticipate wearing it again.

I used this Vogue pattern and altered it slightly. I raised the waist about 2.5 inches and added about three inches to the bottom. The mock up dress I made was in a size 14, which fit my waist, but the top I took down to a size 6 so that the bodice fit properly. I love the pattern and can’t wait to make it when I don’t have to alter it so much!

I just love the exposed zipper too! It offsets the fancy lace nicely!
