Nickel & Suede Photo Shoot - Behind the Scenes
If you missed it on social media, last week I was able to go out to San Francisco for a few days to tour Stitch Fix and to relax on a (much needed) vacation. I had an amazing week away getting to know other bloggers, learning about the company, and taking a breather from everything that has been happening at home. I'm back from California, and the weekend definitely consisted of the dreaded vacation hangover and realizing how behind I am. It was such a fun trip, but I am ready to get back to life. I'll be sharing more about my experience later this week, but I also want to catch you up on the other fun, stressful, crazy, and exciting things that have been going on!
As you know, we launched our fall collection on Nickel & Suede last week. I'm so happy with how it turned out, but holy cow, it was amazing how much work it took to get it together. From new product development to tracking down new leather, I was super busy and learning all along the way. One of the hardest and yet most fun parts of launching that collection was putting together the photo shoot that we used to update the website.
I didn't have any prior experience with planning or executing a project like this, so I was starting from scratch. All I knew was that I needed the right photographer. Thankfully I found Sarah and not only was she super talented, but she really helped me pull the whole thing off.
We were able to find three models through referrals and set a date. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy for me to pick models! I had a really hard time telling anyone they weren't quite what we were looking for, especially any of my friends who were so willing to help! I ended up deciding to choose models that I had never met to take away any awkwardness. While I did end up making friends with them, it helped to just show up and meet them the day of.
Next, we needed to find clothing to dress the models in - after all, their accessories were taken care of. One of the most exciting parts of doing the photo shoot was working with our local Madewell store to style and check out clothing for our models. It was a bit overwhelming because everything in Madewell is good, but we narrowed it down and had a great time pairing Nickel & Suede with their clothing.
On the day of the photo shoot, we all met at our photographer's house for hair and make up touch ups. We had a great time dressing everyone and were lucky enough to have a super cool hairstylist, Faith, to help us out with beach waves, top knots, and braids on site.
We took photos at two different locations and just had a blast sweating, changing outfits, and styling each model. The girls were really good sports and the longer we took photos, the better everyone jived together. I was so glad not to be on the spot in front of the camera for a change, but as you can see, I dressed the part. The girls all teased me that you could tell who styled the shoot by how I was dressed - chambray shirt, black denim, and ankle boots.
Overall, it was such a great experience! I learned so much through the process, and although I'm sure it wasn't perfect, it was a great starting place. In general I'm such a nervous person, but this step outside my comfort zone definitely paid off. I love that this is my job and look forward to getting to work more on the creative side of this small business.
